Kaikolar, an ancient legendary clan from the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, are descendants of the nine warrior brothers. The mythology describes them to have emerged from the nine gems that spilled from the anklet of Goddess Parvati, consort of Lord Shiva, to fight alongside their younger son, Lord Karthikeya, the Hindu God of War. Veerbahu, the eldest brother led a large army as the General of Lord Kartikeya, who is symbolized by his spear called the ‘Vel’ and defeated the demonic Asura Surpadma on the sands of Thiruchendur, where, even today, a huge temple stands to commemorate the victory of the good over the evil. After the war, it is believed that the warriors were advised to take weaving as a profession which does not involve the destruction or injury of any living creature. Thus, their name ‘Kaikolar’ comes from the Tamil words “kai” (hands) and “kol” (shuttle used in loom).
As recorded in the history, the medieval era (800 A.D – 1400 A.D) saw the Kaikolar community resurrect themselves as brave and trusted battalions of the Chola Kings who ruled over large parts of South India and South-east Asia. The brave warriors of this weaving clan were known to behead themselves in the event of not being able to keep up their commitment to their Emperor.
